The arrest and imprisonment of Yukos owner and CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky had profound implications for the country’s political landscape. The Yukos case signaled perhaps the most significant shift in the balance of power under President Vladimir Putin. On the whole, the balance in the Kremlin began to favor the group of so-called siloviki, the former security officials brought in by Putin from St. Petersburg. The siloviki and their modus operandi started to dominate the country’s leadership structure. It is difficult to judge the chances of a reversal. The main question now is what further consequences the Khodorkovsky case may cause for political life in Russia.

Here, we present expert commentary by Carnegie analysts as well as additional resources for information on the Khodorkovsky case and the Yukos affair.
